Laboratory Course in Particle Physics at PSI
Teilchenphysik am PSI
During semester breaks 6-12 students stay for 3 weeks at PSIand participate in a hands-on course on experimental particle physics, wherea small but real experiment is performed in common, includingdesign, construction, running and analysis. The exact date is determined by the PSI beam schedule.
The course focuses on the connection between particle physics theory and experimental results to provide a comprehensive modern view of the Standard Model. The covered topics are quantum electrodynamics (QED) and quantum chromodynamics (QCD).
The concepts and computational techniques acquired in the context of QED and QCD (during the Phenomenology of Particle Physics I course) will be applied and expanded to the weak interaction and electroweak theory. Spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Higgs mechanism will also be introduced completing the description of the Standard Model of particle physics.
