This course introduces students to a socio-ecological system that combines high depopulation rates and corruption with extraordinary cultural and biological diversity that are at risk of loss. This system is explored with local stakeholders and in the field, analysed by a conceptual model and measures are identified that support both conservation and development goals for the region.
Capstone course in which students solve complex real-world land-use problems, for which no single correct solution exists. Students work in project teams and take the role of consultants. They integrate the knowledge acquired during their previous studies and deepen their analysis, problem-solving and writing skills.

In this course, the students explore ecological approaches, philosophical foundations, and practical implementations of nature conservation. Based on case studies, they are introduced to different views, values and ideals inherent in these activities.
The course provides methods and tools for ecological evaluations dealing with nature conservation and landscape planning. It covers census methods, ecological criteria, indicators, indices and critically appraises objectivity and accuracy of the available methods, tools and procedures. Birds and plants are used as main examples guiding through different case studies.
In this course, interdisciplinary student teams work with societal partners to understand and address a real-world problem. Students design and implement a transdisciplinary, solution-oriented research project and communicate their findings to academic and broader societal audiences. In 2026, the focus is on climate change adaptation in Surselva, a mountain region in the Swiss canton of Grisons.
